We have a guest cottage on the property that I use as my office, but that we also rent out for a day or two to traveling guests. Most people who rent are looking for something different than the typical hotel room, so being out in the country on a farm gives them peace, quiet and an exceptional view! For the most part, interaction with our guests is pretty much limited to check in and check out, but occasionally we have those who wander around with us while we are working to ask questions about farming.
This past weekend our guests consisted of a mother and her twelve-year-old son, Will. Naturally, Steve and I assumed that, even though Will’s mom had said Will expressed an interest in knowing more about farming, he would be the typical adolescent boy who tires quickly with dull chores and dirty jobs. We figured he would be totally engrossed in video games or closely monitoring social media on his phone. You know what they say about assuming……
From the moment Will stepped out of the car until he and his mom pulled back out of the drive, Will was “on duty”. He gathered eggs, hauled water, moved fowl pens, took down electric poultry fencing and helped hang it in the barn. He fed birds and helped tuck them into their coops at night. He spread pine shavings in the chicken coop and put down fresh straw in the guinea coop.
All Steve had to do was open the door and Will was there, staring him in the eye expectantly. Steve headed off to work the farmer’s market and Will showed up. Upon arrival back at the farm from the market, Will was already unloading the car before I turned off the engine. Sent him out to pick corn and he was back at the barn in ten minutes with a full crate asking what was next.
Panic set in as we began to run out of chores for this energized bunny to do! At one point Steve looked at me and jokingly asked, “do you need your car washed?” Finally, at 4:30 on Saturday afternoon Steve, exhausted from working harder than he ever has trying to keep up with his farmer in training, made the executive decision to head to the pool. I swear Will looked genuinely disappointed.
So if anyone is looking to have their garage or gutters cleaned out, I know this kid from Charlotte…….
